The U.S. Department of Energy announced more awards for promoting energy-efficiency research and development, and Cree Inc., Durham, N.C., won $3.7 million in funding for grid scale power conversion modules. The silicon carbide power modules "will develop advanced transistors for electrical substations that can make the electrical grid more flexible and controllable" said the website for DOE's Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy program. "Using silicon carbide material, these transistors will achieve record high voltage (15-20kV). With these advanced transistors, electrical substations could replace today's massive (8,000 lb) distribution transformers with much smaller, suitcase-sized electronic transformers (100 lbs)."
