DOE report highlights distributed wind turbines for export growth

Most of the buzz around distributed power generation concentrates on the growth of rooftop solar photovoltaics backed by a storage solution, but other options exist. One that often gets overlooked is the potential of small-scale wind power, but that may change if people get wind of the Department of Energy’s latest report on the technology.

In its 2013 Distributed Wind Market Report, released this week, the DOE found that exports of U.S.-made small wind turbines grew 70% from 8MW in 2012 to 13.6MW in 2013. Turbines were exported to more than 50 countries, with Italy, UK, Germany and Greece ahead of China in the line of buyers. In 2013, 76% of U.S. small turbine production went for sale overseas.

In the U.S. market, 30.4MW of new distributed wind capacity was added.
