An electric car made the 372-mile drive from Munich in southern Germany to Berlin without recharging its battery, setting what organizers hailed as a new world distance record for an everyday vehicle, according to a report from Agence France Presse (AFP). The yellow and purple Audi A2 took around seven hours to complete the 600-kilometer trip.

Anxiety over electric vehicles' limited range is often mentioned as the primary potential obstacle that could prevent widespread adoption of the cars for personal transportation. This concern is behind the huge push to build out charging infrastructure in time to serve the wave of electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles planned for introduction over the next few years. The rush to install charging systems was the subject of a cover story in the September 2010 issue of Electrical Wholesaling.
