While most executives in the electrical industry think of Siemens as one of the largest manufacturers in the distribution equipment, utility and industrial automation markets and as the parent company of Osram Sylvania, many probably don’t realize the company has become one of the largest producers of wind turbines. According to a July 28 report in the Orlando Sentinel, Siemens AG is now the third-largest supplier of wind turbines in the United States and has 5,700 employees working in its wind business, compared to just 800 employees five years ago.

The article also cited statistics from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Washington, D.C., that the 20,000 wind turbines now operating in 35 U.S. states are producing electricity equal to the amount consumed by 7 million homes, and that nearly 5,100 wind turbines were installed in the United States last year.
