Osram to Acquire LED Specialist LED Engin

June 24, 2017
The deal adds ultra-bright and compact emitters, components and modules to Osram's specialty lighting offering.

Osram, Munich, Germany, is adding to its offerings of LED lighting components with an agreement to acquire U.S.-based LED Engin Inc., a manufacturer of specialty LED components based in San Jose, CA.

LED Engin has approximately 30 employees and annual sales of around $10 million. The company specializes in ultra-bright, ultra-compact, solid-state emitters, optics components and light source modules for lighting solutions in a variety of specialty markets including entertainment lighting, ultraviolet, horticulture, tunable white and medical lighting applications.

The companies have an established relationship. LED Engin’s products mainly incorporate LED chips from Osram Opto Semiconductors. The company’s offerings center on its LuxiGen Platform, an emitter and lens or integrated module system positioned to give fixture designers and manufacturers a powerful and flexible light source to work with, according to the company’s website. LED Engin products are used in applications where powerful, compact LED light sources or special customized LEDs are required, such as restaurants, shops, museums and galleries. The company also supplies lighting products for horticulture markets and powerful UV LEDs for industrial applications, such as the printing, curing and dental markets.

“LED Engin opens up new opportunities for us to offer our customers tailored specialty lighting solutions. LED Engin products are suitable for a variety of specialty applications, making them an ideal addition to our portfolio,” said Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of Osram’s Specialty Lighting (SP) business unit.

Once it joins Osram, LED Engin will be integrated into the company’s professional and industrial applications section of the SP business unit. In the entertainment sector, LED Engin enhances Osram’s offering by joining ClayPaky and ADB, the specialists for concert, event, theater, stage, and TV studio lighting.

“We are excited to join Osram and look forward to expanding our product portfolio and customer reach while continuing to serve our existing valued customers with additional resources,” said David Tahmassebi, CEO of LED Engin.

Since it was spun off from technology giant Siemens AG in 2012, Osram has continued to strengthen its focus through the sale of its Ledvance legacy lamps business and a string of acquisitions. So far this year it has acquired lighting services specialist Maneri-Agraz Enterprises, Houston, and has taken a stake in Munich-based horticultural appliance maker Agrilution.
