NEMA EBCI Index for Current Conditions Drops 10 Points In September

NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America fell 10 points in September, dropping to 42.5. Fifteen percent of panelists reported conditions improved in September, a decline from 30% the previous month. In contrast, 30% of panelists claimed the business environment worsened in September, compared to 25% in August. The share of panelists stating that conditions were unchanged rose to 55% from 45%.

The EBCI Index is a monthly survey of senior executives at electrical manufacturers published by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Rosslyn, Va. Any score over the 50-point level indicates a greater number of panelists see conditions improving than see them deteriorating.

The EBCI for future North American conditions declined modestly to 52.5 in September after measuring 55 in each of the last two months. A smaller share of panelists in September (25%) expects conditions to improve than was the case in August (35%). Likewise, a smaller share in September (20%) expects conditions will deteriorate than was the case in August (25%). The share expecting to see no change in business conditions rose to 55% in September from 40% in August.
