Solar association report highlights U.S. large corporations deploying solar
Walmart led the way in a report on solar adoption by U.S. corporations by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) this week. The association announced the winners of this year’s Solar Champion Awards, honoring top U.S. companies for their continued commitment to the deployment of clean solar energy.
Walmart’s stores and other large facilities have thus far installed 89.43MW of solar photovoltaic power capacity on their roofs or other installations. Costco placed second with 47.06MW, followed by Kohl’s at 44.72MW, Apple (40.73MW) and Ikea (35.08MW).
In the report titled “Solar Means Business 2013,” SEIA and the Vote Solar Initiative said its survey of the Fortune 100 showed that companies that have adopted solar power continue to add more capacity, in part because of increasingly favorable economics.
“The consistent decline in the cost of PV systems has continued to improve the solar value proposition to commercial users. The average price of a completed commercial PV project has dropped by 30% since the beginning of the 2011 making solar more affordable than ever for American businesses. The dramatic fall in prices is encouraging more and more companies to open their investment portfolios to on-site solar energy systems.”
