Osram Sylvania and Belkin Partner on Home Controls

Osram Sylvania, Danvers, Mass., said it has an agreement with cable and networking company Belkin International to integrate Osram’s Lightify lighting control system with Belkin’s WeMo home automation system so that Osram’s lighting systems can be controlled and integrated into WeMo’s ecosystem.

Osram Sylvania, Danvers, Mass., said it has an agreement with cable and networking company Belkin International, Playa Vista, Calif., to integrate Osram’s Lightify lighting control system with Belkin’s WeMo home automation system so that Osram’s lighting systems can be controlled and integrated into WeMo’s ecosystem.

The move allows the integration of Belkin’s WeMo Home Automation and Osram’s Lightify Smart Connected Lighting Ecosystems, both of which are strong entrants in the contest to provide the connective infrastructure for the Internet of Things and bring the long-deferred promise of mainstream home automation to market.

Osram plans to introduce the partnership with a WeMo-compatible version of the Ultra iQ BR30 LED light bulb, which will be available through retailers such as Amazon and through Belkin this fall. The program will be expanded to other connected lighting and networked home products shortly after Osram introduces its Lightify ecosystem to the European market this fall, Osram said in a release.

Osram and Belkin look for the combined systems to embrace all kinds of new functionality as home networking and the Internet of Things evolve. “The bulbs will connect to the WeMo ecosystem via the WeMo Link and will work with other WeMo products, including the WeMo Light Switch, WeMo Insight Switch and NetCam HD+.  Controlled via the WeMo app, the Ultra iQ LED bulbs will also work with IFTTT, which connects them to other web-based services and applications such as Facebook, SMS, Gmail, Calendar, etc., to perform custom tasks or trigger events.  For example, consumers can program the bulbs to turn on when it rains or receive a text message when the bulbs are turned off.”
