Legrand Makes Acquisitions to Expand in Datacom and Enter Architectural Lighting

April 22, 2016
Legrand, North America, West Hartford, Conn., announced two acquisitions over the past couple of weeks that take the company in some new directions.

Legrand, North America, West Hartford, Conn., announced two acquisitions over the past couple of weeks that take the company in some new directions.

Legrand is taking a plunge into architectural lighting with a definitive agreement to acquire Pinnacle Architectural Lighting, a Denver-based manufacturer of lighting fixtures and architectural systems for commercial, educational and healthcare applications. It then announced the acquisition of Luxul Wireless, an expansion of its home and small commercial networking offerings.

Pinnacle Architectural Lighting has 230 employees and reports annual sales of around $105 million, of which 95% are in the United States.

Between its Pass & Seymour and WattStopper brands, Legrand has a significant presence in lighting control for non-residential buildings and some lighting in segments related to the electrical infrastructure such as hallway lighting and emergency lighting. The addition of Pinnacle’s products and expertise will expand Legrand’s lighting and building control capabilities, establishing it as a major provider of architectural lighting in North America.

Legrand said the architectural lighting and control market continues to grow as digital technology transforms product offerings, while lighting designers and specifiers drive demand for more innovative and contemporary lighting solutions. Pinnacle’s product line added to Legrand’s technologies and capabilities in controls, networking, design, and user experience will foster more differentiated lighting products that are architecturally designed and meet stringent code requirements, the company said.

“Pinnacle was built on a foundation of providing creative lighting products and excellent service for the architectural lighting community,” said Michael Moore, president of Pinnacle Architectural Lighting Inc. “With the acquisition by Legrand, we can accelerate growth by leveraging their global reach, infrastructure and technology to bring new architectural lighting solutions to our customers.”

“With the acquisition of Pinnacle, Legrand expands its ability to bring innovative, attractive and solution-oriented products that meet customer’s evolving needs,” said John Selldorff, CEO, Legrand, North & Central America. “Pinnacle’s attention to design and service, customer focus, and technology innovation align perfectly with Legrand’s strategic market approach.”

Legrand and Pinnacle expect to complete the transaction within the next two months, upon fulfilment of closing conditions, including receipt of regulatory approvals.

This week Legrand also announced a definitive agreement to acquire Luxul Wireless, Inc., Draper, Utah, a networking provider for residential and small-to-medium business markets. Luxul makes wireless controllers and access points, routers, range extenders and low-voltage switches including power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switches and injectors, sold to custom integrators of home control, audio/video and IP-based security solutions.

The Luxul lines will join Legrand’s On-Q and Nuvo home networking systems to make a more complete solution.

“A great user experience starts with a great network and Luxul is #1 in their market. Their solutions will become an essential component of Legrand’s On-Q and Nuvo home systems, as well as supporting countless other systems,” said Selldorff. “This acquisition brings best-in-class network expertise to Legrand and leverages many channel synergies.”

Legrand in its release announcing the deal said the “explosive growth of IoT devices and automated systems throughout residential and SMB markets creates great demand for Luxul high-performance networks.”

In the company’s boilerplate summary of Luxul’s business, we noted this: “All Luxul products include free lifetime support, a three-year limited warranty and are available ONLY through industry-recognized distributors of residential and commercial integration products.”
