Obituary: Lutron's John McKiernan

John F. McKiernan, 79, Lutron’s vice chairman of the board, passed away on Monday, Oct. 21.

John F. McKiernan, 79, Lutron’s vice chairman of the board, passed away on Monday, Oct. 21. According to the obituary published in Pennsylvania’s Morning Call newspaper, he died peacefully in his home after a courageous battle with myleofibrosis.  An Air Force veteran who served in the Korean War, McKiernan was a champion swimmer in the U.S. Air Force and taught electronics before joining Joel Spira, Lutron’s founder, in 1973 for what would be a 40-year career in the electrical manufacturing industry. John was a fixture at all of the electrical industry’s major functions and was one of the lighting world’s best-known executives. In addition to traveling the world for Lutron, McKiernan was active with the Electrification Council, American Lighting Association, National Electrical Manufacturers Representatives Association and many other electrical associations.

According to John’s obituary in the Morning Call newspaper: “John is survived by his three children, Debbie Stevens of Downingtown, Marcia Kennet of Macungie and John E. McKiernan of Macungie; his dear friend, Patricia Panzarella; his nine grandchildren ranging in ages from 32 to 4 years; seven great-grandchildren; his former wife, Donna McKiernan; two brothers, Brian and Brad; two sisters, Judy Wilkens, Ruth Schroeder; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Elsie Mullins.
